Born Pretty I A Topshop Lipstick Dupe

Born Pretty Velvet Finish Moisturising Lipstick in the Shade 01

I do like a peachy coral lipstick and this one from Born Pretty is a beauty!
The packaging and branding is very clearly a duplication of the ever popular Topshop lipstick range and this isn’t where the similarities end. This Born Pretty Lipstick in the shade (01) looks a lot like Topshop’s peachy coral shade ‘Ooh La la’. The moisturizing formula and creamy finish is also quite similar.
Although it would be easy to write-off this lipstick as just another cheap imitation, upon taking a closer look it’s actually pretty clear that this is an impressive product in it’s own right…

The metal casing makes this feel like a high quality lipstick. The cold and slightly weighted feel of the packaging, as well as the way that the lid securely clicks in place reminds me a lot of MAC lipsticks, which is never a bad thing in my opinion! As I’ve already mentioned, the outer packaging design is a total Topshop lipstick dupe (or ‘rip-off’, depending on your opinion). Nevertheless, the overall look of this lipstick with it’s grey on white packaging is pleasing in all of it’s simplicity and familiarity.
Unlike MAC lipsticks which smell of vanilla and Topshop lipsticks which usually smell slightly fruity, this Born Pretty lipstick doesn’t have any discernible scent which will no doubt be a plus point for nasally sensitive individuals.

Born Pretty Velvet Finish Moisturising Lipstick in the Shade 01 Swatched
When swatched on the back of my hand, I noticed that the coverage is buildable which gives multiple application options. It can either be worn sheer for a subtle effect or it can be layered for intensified colour pay-off.

The texture of this lipstick is creamy, velvety and soft. It has a shiny and almost glossy sheen when first applied to the lips but after a few hours it does dry down to a creamy matte finish. The moisturizing formula contains coconut oil and various waxes so it never feels drying on my lips, even after several hours wear which brings me onto my next point; this lipstick has phenomenally good wear time. It lasts for hours upon hours and even stays largely intact after eating and drinking. This is a great long lasting, low maintenance lipstick as it only requires a bit of touching up throughout the day rather than complete re-application.

I hadn’t heard of Born Pretty until recently when I saw a few product reviews popping up in my Bloglovin’ feed. So who / what is Born Pretty? It’s actually an international online retailer with over 10,000 items currently stocked including a huge range of beauty products. They also offer free worldwide shipping on everything, so there aren’t any extra P&P costs to worry about which something I always like. My products arrived within a couple of weeks of being sent which I was happy with. I think Born Pretty dispatch out of Asia and are possibly based in China with this lipstick itself being from a Hong Kong based company. The prices on their website are all in US Dollars and everything is fairly inexpensive. The price point on this lipstick isn’t super low but it’s reasonable, especially if you would rather pay about 40% less than you would for a £8 Topshop lipstick. If you have seen any of my Memebox reviews here and here), you may already know why I think that there are some really good makeup and beauty products coming from East Asia at the moment that are gaining popularity.

Born Pretty Velvet Finish Moisturising Lipstick in the Shade 01 On Lips

This may not be the most Fall appropriate lipstick shade in the world but I’m a bit of a rebel when it comes to seasonal trends so I’ll probably wear this regardless of the time of year. It’s a gorgeous colour that reminds me of another well loved lipstick I own, the MUA lipstick in shade 16 Nectar (review here).

It’s always exciting to find a product that leaves you pleasantly surprised rather than sadly disappointed. This lipstick has certainly wowed me and exceeded my expectations!
