Review: Born Pretty Lip Crayons

Review: Born Pretty Lip Crayons Shades 01 & 12

Lip crayons are something I’ve really started to enjoy using recently. I love the combination of sheer coverage, moisturising formula and subtle shine in Clinique-style twist up ‘chubby stick’ packaging. The lip crayons I’m reviewing today are from Born Pretty and their Hot Shop makeup range, which is clearly a imitation of Topshop’s make up range!

I’ve tried some lipsticks from the Born Pretty Hot Shop range previously and I was seriously impressed by those (review here). I had high hopes for these lip crayons so if you would like to know what I think of them, read on!

Born Pretty is an online shop which sells a huge selection of products including lots of make up. One of the things I love most about Born Pretty is the fact that there is free shipping available on everything, which is just incredible!

There are 12 shades available in this lip crayon range and I have two shades: 01 and 12. This might only be a small point to mention but oh, how I wish these had shade names instead of numbers! Anyway, these lip crayons are good value for money as they’re usually £5.40 but they’re currently on offer for £2.58.
The packaging is lovely and surprisingly good quality considering the budget price point. The lip crayons themselves come in an attractively illustrated mint green cardboard box which has a information leaflet inside including an ingredients list as well as an exact expiration date for the product (03/10/2017) which I think is much more useful than most UK make up expiration guides which only give the product shelf life terms of months (e.g. 24) which is easy to loose track of!

The crayons come presented beautifully in mint green casing with an overall appearance very close to Topshop Makeup. This packaging does get scratched easily though so I’m super careful with mine when carrying them in my handbag. I adore the mint green packaging so much, I really don’t want to ruin it! The crayons have a twist up mechanism on the bottom making them simple to use and eliminating the need to sharpen, which is convenient and hygienic.

The formula is smooth and creamy and the colour payoff is surprisingly pigmented for a lip crayon. They feel very moisturising and it’s not surprising since they contain shea butter, mango seed oil, jojoba oil, and vitamin E. These look really nice on the lips but they do transfer easily as the formula doesn’t set or dry. To stay looking at their best, these will need topping up every couple of hours.

These lip crayons are said to contain ‘LED Pixel Pigment’ technology that creates a shimmery and multidimensional look. I would say these lip crayons do give a flattering and fuller look to my lips. However, the shade 01 contains some fine gold shimmer particles so I actually prefer shade 12 overall which doesn’t have any noticeable shimmer.

Shade 1 is a lovely muted coral shade with a touch of gold shimmer which does look quite noticeable in some lights.

Shade 12 is a brownish plum shade without any shimmer.

Overall Summary

Pros:
Inexpensive
Gorgeous and sturdy packaging
Easy to use twist up pencil format
Nice pigmentation
Buildable coverage
Moisturising formula
Lovely shade range
No scent
Free shipping
Topshop makeup dupe

Cons:
Wears off after a couple of hours
Does transfer
Feels a bit waxy

The packaging gets scratched very easily

So, nice products overall! I’m not as blown away by these as I was by the Lipsticks but I do think that these are nice everyday makeup staples as they’re quick and easy to apply and just add a little something to your lips on days when you don’t want lipstick or gloss.

Are you a fan of lip crayons?
