Dermalogica Sebum Clearing Masque

Dermalogica Sebum Clearing Masque Review

Product Review: Dermalogica Sebum Clearing Masque

Oily skin and breakouts are issues that some of us have to deal with regularly. But with so many potential reasons behind an outbreak, and anything ranging from hormones to food sensitivities being a possible trigger, can a skincare product actually do anything to help if the root of the problem is more than skin-deep? This Dermalogica Sebum Clearing Masque certainly thinks it can help fight acne by promising to

… Clear and prevent breakouts… Soothe aggravation brought on by breakouts… Refine and eliminate excess oils for clearer skin.

Dermalogica

Product Description: Dermalogica Sebum Clearing Masque

This acne-fighting face mask from Dermalogica is designed for use between one and three times a week and should be left to work for around 10 minutes but I usually leave it on for a little bit longer! This mask needs applying to clean skin after cleansing and before toning or moisturising.

This quick-drying face mask has a medium consistency and a paste-like texture that applies smoothly. It hardens rapidly and needs applying quickly so perhaps focus on one area at a time. It feels tingly and fresh and has a light, refreshing fragrance. My skin is left feeling balanced and decongested after use.

It isn’t drying at all unlike some clay masks and for combination skin prone to dry patches, this can always be applied just to the areas most prone to oil such as the forehead, nose and chin while avoiding any drier areas.

It can also be used as a targeted spot treatment to help treat and clear active breakouts.

Alternatives

You may prefer other acne fighting masks from Dermalogica such as the Dermalogica Skin Refining Masque or Charcoal Rescue Masque £40.00 75ml if you are currently pregnant and looking to avoid Salicylic Acid.

This mask from Ren has a comparable price point per ml to the Dermalogica masks and it may be a suitable alternative if you want something that’s high-end but easy to find in most Beauty Halls.

Ren’s Clarimatte Invisible Pores Detox Mask 27.00 50ml.

If there’s no way you’re paying Dermalogica or Ren prices for your skincare products but still want to use a reputable brand that’s higher up the skincare foodchain than mere drugstore, you could consider this mask from Origins.

Origins Clear Improvement Active Charcoal Mask to Clear Pores £27.00 100ml

More affordable options yet still are these face masks from High Street retailers including L’Oreal, Sanctuary and Lush.

L’Oreal Pure Clay Detox Mask £7.99 50ml

Sanctuary Spa 5 Minute Thermal Detox Mask £10.00 75ml

Lush Mask of Magnaminty Face and Body Mask

Ultra budget options that will no doubt appeal to the most frugal fashionistas and beauty savers among us include these clay face masks from DermaV10 that are available from a whole host of discount retailers including The Range and B&M.

Derma V10 Detoxifying Clay Mask £1.99 50ml.

For a closer look at the L’Oreal Pure Clay Detox Mask in comparison to the Derma V10 Detoxifying Clay Mask, have a look at my post on budget savvy skincare dupes.

If you have your heart set on Dermalogica but want to try a slightly more affordable targeted acne-fighting face mask, you could try the Dermalogica Clear Start Cleansing Cooling Masque £16.15 75ml. You can see my review of the Dermalogica Cleansing Cooling Masque here.

Final Thoughts

The Dermalogica Sebum Clearing Masque is a pricey product but it does work well for a lot of people who try it and it could be worth the investment if you’ve already tried a lot of products and now you want to pull out the big guns so to speak and see if a fancier product can do anything more for you.

It’s a good one to go for if  you prefer to have one product capable of doing a really good job over several cheaper products that may or may not work very well for you. Of course, this mask won’t work miracles for everyone either but at least with Dermalogica you can always get hold of a few samples before deciding whether or not to purchase a full size product.

You can also look into having a Dermalogica skin mapping consultation to figure out which of their products might work best for you.

If your looking for high-end professional skincare from one of the best known brands for quality, then this might be for you. If affordability is more your thing, perhaps one of my alternatives will be more to your liking.

Overall Summary

Acne can be a real problem and it’s sad that many of us think it’s a problem that simply goes away in our early twenties only to find out that there is such a thing as adult acne that can persist for decades after puberty.

If skin issues are getting you down and problem skin is causing you issues, this mask may well be worth trying. It works for a lot of people and the results it can give makes the cost a little easier to swallow.

If you want to dabble with some Dermalogica products but aren’t about to fork out a load of money on their products, you could buy Dermalogica samples online from Ebay.

You could also ask for samples at places like Debenhams but I think it’s better to do that only if you actually have the intention of buying something from them in the near future otherwise it’s a little bit cheeky IMHO.

If you’re ordering any Dermalogica products online from somewhere like Pure Beauty, you can usually add sample sachets to your order for free.

What are your thoughts on Dermalogica? Have you tried any products from them yet?
