Wickford & Co Mulled Wine Candle

Wickford & Co Mulled Wine Christmas Candle Tall

I first blogged about this Wickford & Co Mulled Wine Candle from Homebargains back in 2016. It’s still a firm favourite of mine today and a great bargain at £2.99 for 85 hours of burn time.

I have literally just finished burning one of these entire large jars again, so I wanted to take the opportunity to revisit this budget-friendly Wickford & Co Candle in today’s post and share my thoughts on it in time for Christmas.

This year, Homebargains have brought back my all-time favourite Gingerbread Candle and have a replacement for this Mulled Wine fragrance plus, two other Christmassy scented Wickford & Co candles are available. Perhaps even more excitingly, there’s a tealight Advent Calendar available too.

I think this Wickford & Co Mulled Wine candle is a fairly obvious attempt at a Yankee Candle dupe. It’s in a similar clear large glass Mason Jar with a heavy airtight lid and attractive photo-label on the front, making the packaging very similar to that of the iconic Yankee large jars.

One definite difference is the burn time. Yankee large jars can last for between 110-150 hours where as this Wickford & Co. Candle only burns for up to 85 hours.

This Mulled Wine candle isn’t actually my favourite Christmas offering from Wickford & Co. but it is probably my second favourite. The Wickford & Co Gingerbread Candle already has the number one spot in my heart. The Gingerbread candle is already out in Homebargains and I’m so pleased they have brought it back again for another year.

Wickford & Co Mulled Wine Candle Care

I always keep the wick trimmed and burn it for intervals consisting of no more than 4 hours at a time, as is recommended on the instructions. This way, the candle burns safely and evenly, also avoiding too much wax being wasted at the bottom.

In all honesty, I do think that sooting is an issue with this candle as you can see evidenced by the black ring of soot around the rim. Indeed, it’s a little known fact that burning any candle can create dirty smoke that eventually blackens your home decor and that’s why despite really loving them, I try not to burn candles too often in my home.

Less scent towards the bottom?

I also think that the fragrance gets weaker towards the end of the candle. It’s actually something I think I’ve noticed with a few other scented candles too and I wonder if anyone else had noticed this kind of thing happening? Maybe it’s normal for the scent to become weaker once there is less wax left? Who knows but I’ve never heard anyone else mention it before so I thought I would put it out there!

Re-releases, Replacements & New fragrances for 2018

This year, there are four Wickford & Co Christmas candles available in Homebargains. There’s my favourite Gingerbread one, as well as Vanilla Sugar Cookies and Warm Apple & Cinnimon. There doesn’t seem to be this Mulled Wine fragrance available this year but there is an exciting replacement in the form of the new Mulled Pear & Cranberry Fragrance.

Warm Apple & Cinnamon

The Warm Apple & Cinnamon Christmas candle looks good and the Vanilla Sugar Cookies candle (unpictured) sounds lovely too. But if you only try one of these candles, it has to be Gingerbread one IMHO!

Oh, and one more amazing thing that you need to know about these candles is that just like real Yankee candles, they are available in a range of sizes with a small votive costing as little as £0.39p! So, you can try out a small size before buying a large size! How amazing is that?!

Nothing but Yankee will do…

What do you think of this Wickford & Co Mulled Wine candle? Do you appreciate budget candles or do you prefer to use only premium and branded wax products?

  1. I love this! I am a candle lover so I really enjoyed reading about this company / brand 🙂 I think it’s a little disappointing that the scent gets weaker when you get near the bottom! I’m not aware of my favorite brand doing that (Bath & Body Works) but now I’m a bit curious! Thank you Hanna for sharing! xx

    1. Hi, Geraldine! Thanks for sharing your experience with candle scents – it does seem rather odd for this one to get progessively less strong nearer the end, doesn’t it?! Maybe I just get used to the smell more! 😂 Glad that it doesn’t happen with your Bath & Body Works ones anyway! Hope your week had started well. <3 Hanna x

  2. Great blog!! I love mulled rosé x
